Pianos are simultaneously among the heaviest household items and the most delicate. A baby grand weighs 500-600 pounds yet contains thousands of precisely calibrated components that mishandling can damage or knock out of tune. Upright pianos appear manageable until you try navigating their 300-400 pounds down a narrow staircase. Concert grands exceed 1,000 pounds and require complete disassembly for most doorways and staircases.
Our piano movers specialize in these unique challenges. We maintain equipment specifically designed for piano moving – not general furniture dollies pressed into piano service. Our crews receive training in proper piano handling techniques, understanding weight distribution, vulnerable points, and safe transport positioning. We’ve moved pianos throughout Rhode Island – from music schools and concert halls to churches, private homes, recording studios, and teaching facilities. Each piano moving job receives the specialized approach that protects both the instrument and your property.
Piano moving requires techniques general movers never learn:
Our piano movers understand proper lifting points, weight distribution methods, how to navigate tight corners without torque stress on piano frames, safe tilting angles for doorway passage, and appropriate securing methods during transport. These techniques come from specialized training and experience moving hundreds of pianos, not trial-and-error learning on your valuable instrument.
Some pianos won’t fit through doorways or around corners intact:
Grand piano legs must be removed for most moves – our piano movers handle this disassembly professionally, protecting hardware and documenting assembly order. Upright pianos sometimes require pedal lyre removal for narrow passages. We handle all necessary disassembly, transport components safely, and provide complete assembly at your destination, ensuring your piano is ready to play.
Piano moving stresses floors, doorways, and staircases significantly:
We protect your property throughout the piano moving process – floor runners preventing scratches and dents, doorframe padding preventing damage during tight passages, staircase railing protection, and careful navigation preventing wall contact. Professional piano movers leave your property as pristine as your instrument.
Upright pianos (spinets, consoles, studios, full uprights) present unique challenges:
Height and weight distribution make uprights deceptively difficult. They’re top-heavy, making them prone to tipping if handled incorrectly. Most weigh 300-500 pounds – manageable for experienced piano movers with proper equipment, dangerous for amateurs attempting DIY piano moving.
Our upright piano moving process includes evaluating staircase requirements (most uprights must navigate stairs vertically, requiring specialized technique), protecting the back panel (where soundboard damage most commonly occurs), securing the lid and keyboard cover, and using piano boards allowing controlled descent of stairs rather than risky carrying.
We’ve moved upright pianos throughout Rhode Island – up narrow Providence apartment staircases, through tight Cranston colonial doorways, into basement music studios, and everywhere pianos find their homes. Affordable piano movers shouldn’t mean risking damage to save money.
Baby grands (5′ to 6′ long) are the most common grand pianos in Rhode Island homes:
Moving a piano of this size requires disassembly – legs must be removed and the piano placed on its side on a specialized piano board. The lid is secured or removed. The lyre (pedal assembly) comes off. Our piano movers with experience handle this disassembly systematically, protecting the piano’s finish throughout.
Baby grands weigh 500-600 pounds. Once on the piano board, they’re manageable but still require multiple experienced handlers and proper technique. We protect edges and corners, secure the instrument during transport, and navigate doorways and staircases that seem impossibly tight for such a large instrument.
At your destination, we reverse the process – professional assembly includes reattaching legs securely, reinstalling the lyre, positioning the piano precisely where you want it, and leveling it properly for optimal sound. We recommend scheduling a piano tuner within a few weeks, as moving a piano invariably affects tuning even with perfect handling.
Larger grands (6′ to 9’+) require even more expertise:
These instruments can weigh 600-1,200 pounds depending on size. Concert grands approach or exceed half a ton. Moving a piano of this magnitude requires experienced piano movers, not enthusiastic volunteers with good intentions. The consequences of mistakes are catastrophic – serious injuries to people, irreparable damage to instruments worth tens of thousands of dollars, and property damage from dropped pianos.
Our professional piano moving for grands includes complete disassembly (legs, lyre, sometimes music desk), specialized padding for the piano body, secure strapping to piano boards, careful navigation using proper equipment and adequate crew size, climate-controlled transport protecting the piano’s internal mechanisms and finish, and meticulous assembly at your destination.
We’ve moved concert grands for Rhode Island performance venues, transported antique grands for collectors, and relocated family grands from old homes to new. Each receives the same extraordinary care regardless of monetary value – these instruments deserve respect.
Pipe organs and electronic organs require different approaches:
Small electronic organs move like furniture. Large church organs require specialized contractors beyond typical moving services. Mid-size home organs fall within our capabilities – we assess each situation individually. Our piano movers with experience in organ moving can advise whether your specific instrument suits our services or requires specialized organ movers.
